CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1929. The first head of the department was a student of world-famous scientist D.I. Mendeleev, prof. IR. Kuznetsov. After that, the department was headed by the famous scientist academician K.A. Krassuski. 1932, the head of the department was entrusted to the world-famous scientist, student of academician D.N.Zelinsky, later one of the luminaries of Azerbaijan chemical science, who became the president of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, academician Y.G.Mammadaliyev. Gulubeyov, A.A. Mambetov, G.B.Khalilov, docent S.T. Aliyev, professors E.M. Movsumov, R.M. Mustafayev, N.M. Yusifov, docent K.S. Dashdamirov headed it later on.

Currently, the department is headed by Associate professor Ulviya Hasanova.

In 1929, the departments of non-organic chemistry and analytical chemistry were organized: Assoc. M.M. Kirillov headed the department of analytical chemistry and R.N. Shahnazarov headed the department of non-organic chemistry, in 1935 these departments were reunited and the leadership was entrusted to dos B.A. Kamentsev.

During the Great Patriotic War, the department was headed by prof. I.V. Kurchatov. From 1944, the department of inorganic and analytical chemistry functioned as an independent department, the head of which was assigned to docent (later professor) A.A Mambetov, who headed the department until 1971, made a great contribution to the development.

In 1960, the department was given the right to train highly qualified specialists through graduate school.

In 1972-1975 the department was headed by prof. G.B. Khalilov and from1975 it was headed by S.T. Aliyev.

Along with teaching and pedagogical activities, scientific research work was carried out at the department. As early as in the 30, under the leadership of B.A. Kamentsev, employees of the department conducted research in the field of colorimetric determination of arsenic and bismuth. Since 1950, the research work of the department was carried out under the leadership of Prof. AA Mambetov, mainly devoted to the problem of the chemistry of rare metals.

As a result of these researches, S/T Aliyev, F.G Abbasova, M.I. Nabiyev defended their dissertations. Research work was also carried out in the field of organic chemistry at the mentioned department (H.Y. Hajiyev, F.I. Hasanov). Teachers of the department received a large number of copyright certificates, patents and published scientific articles, textbooks and teaching aids. Employees of the department demonstrated the results of their research at various symposiums and conferences.

In 1929, D.I. Mendeleev's student the independent Department of Biochemistry was established by prof. I.P. Kuznetsov and later headed by the corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, prof. K.A. Krasussky.

From 1932 he worked at the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry. DN Zelinski's student, later corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, president of the AzEA, world-famous scientist Y.G. Mammadayev was the head. Later, until 1938, a prominent scientist, prof. Y.S. Musabayov, and in 1937-1941 acad. A.A. Palladi's student docent K.M. Rahimzade was appointed as head.

In 1943, it joined the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry. H.I.Safarov, and since 1955 prof. M.R Gulubeyov headed it.

From the first days of its existence, its employees have been actively engaged in teaching and research. At the beginning of the war, K.N. Rahimzade wrote the first textbook on biochemistry in the Azerbaijani language.

In the 40 and 50, under the leadership of prof. H.I. Safarov, great work has been done in the field of training scientific personnel. In the chair under the leadership of prof. M.R. Gulubeyov, researches were carried out in the field of obtaining "Lanolin derivatives", "Cosmetic stearins".

Under the leadership of Prof. G.B. Khalilov, biochemical scientists of the department conducted extensive research in various fields of agriculture, which were summed up and defended Ph.D. and doctoral dissertations (N.M. Yusifov, A.A. Nabiyev, M.M. Aliyev, R.N. Allahverdiyev, K.S. Dashdamirov).

Later, the departments of non-organic and analytical chemistry, biological chemistry were merged and until 2008 it was headed by prof. R.M. Mustafayev.
At present, the department has 1 doctor of sciences, a professor, 6 candidates of sciences, an associate professor, 1 head teacher, 5 assistants.

Textbooks, teaching aids, and subject programs developed by the staff of the department in recent years are as follows.
